Between 2001 and 2011, some academicians, journalists and media artists have written articles about the scavengers from Kotranıs and their conflicts. The book for the video exhibition "The Fire and the Wedding" included those articles about the scavengers. The following article, which has been written by the media artist Ege Berensel as the foreword of this book, deals with the situation of the scavengers from Kotranıs and the aesthetic and political context of the videos in the exhibition "The Fire and the Wedding".

Hareketlilik her zaman önemlidir.

The Fire and the Wedding

Antonio Negri, in an interview, once said that it is needed to evacuate Turkey by putting Kurds on ships. “A spectre is haunting the world; for Marx this spectre was communism. Today, it is migration that is haunting the world, and I think, the immigrants are the new ‘barbarians’ invading the Empire in the 21st century. Yet, this is an affirmative ‘barbarianism’. I am all in favour of migration movements… These movements create a new type of activity, new fields of freedom wherever they go. In fact, human society was established on the routes of circulation. Mobility has always been important. It is the most efficient action against the capital. There had never been a similar migration movement in the history as there is now… Mobility of the labor force and uncontrolled migration movements are accelerating the decline of the system. Governments are conducting a big operation, preparing hard laws against illegal immigration penetrating through their national sovereignty. However, they won’t be able to stop the movement. Now, we have to sit down and think how we will create a new lifestyle out of infinite routes of these new invader ‘barbarians’”.
“The constitution of the multitude appears first as a spatial movement that constitutes the multitude in limitless place. The mobility of commodities, and thus of that special commodity that is labor-power, has been presented by capitalism ever since its birth as the fundamental condition of accumulation” [Hardt and Negri, Empire]. This kind of a mobility of individuals, groups, and masses that we observe today within the Empire, however, cannot be completely explained with the law of capitalist accumulation—this mobility by each step goes beyond the bounds of measure and shatters them. The movements of the multitude give shape to new spaces, and its journeys establish new settlements. Autonomous movement is what determines the place proper to the multitude. As the productive flow of bodies defines new rivers and ports, a new geography is constituted by the multitude. The cities of the earth are becoming at once huge hangars of the collectivized humanity and locomotives for the circulation, temporary settlements and networks of massive distribution of living humanity. Through circulation the multitude recaptures the space and constitutes itself as an active subject. A closer look to the operation of this constitutive process of subjectivity will show up that new spaces are described by unusual topologies, by subterranean and uncontainable rhizomes, by geographical mythologies that mark the new paths of destiny.
These movements often cost terrible suffering, yet they also carry a desire of liberation which remains unsatisfied until the recapture of new spaces where new freedoms are constituted around. These movements determine the new forms of life and collective act wherever they pass and arrive— everywhere they create wealth. The difficulty of ‘politically’ representing minorities and the difficulty of using video as a means of ‘aesthetic’ representation have the same origin: the deterritorialisation of flows [Lazzarato]. Being too small to be represented politically minorities are attached to the majority in the same way that the inexplicable attaches to the explicable. The inexplicable within the majority, the unaccountable is just the one thing that will dissolve and diffuse the majority.
In the videos of “The Fire and the Wedding” the video camera passes from one hand to the other up to a point where the subjective perspective of the shooter/videographer disappears. Sometimes the camera is in the possession of scavengers- it moves through the warehouses, secret spots of tin huts. The collectivization of the production tools saves the videographer from being a “benefactor and ideological guardian”. The videographer doesn’t intent anymore to speak on behalf of underdogs and outsiders, to be their voice, but to place his/her praxis in their behalf. The videographer and the scavenger, the act of collecting images and the act of collecting papers, through double captures they transform each other, they replace each other. What the mass media, television channels, mainstream media constantly censor is the complexity of relations between subjective points of view. A monopolistic opinion wouldn’t be disturbing. On the contrary the relations between subjective points of view affect people and communities beyond the national identities. They describe a collective body which can neither be defined by one person, nor by an imaginary majority. Expressing the differentiating time-space blocks, the collective multitude of various subjective points of view these videos let the editing of the audio-visual sequences to the spectator in the exhibition place.
If real politics is to be looked for within the ontology, as the classical approach teaches us, then the politics of the video is also to be looked for within its own ontology.
Video image is to be discussed more as visual memory, as a factor of the act than as being a representation of realty.
